- Z-Star 1.3.1 will calculate, display, and print an astrological chart for
- anywhere on Earth between 65° north and south latitudes, for any date and

- resolution for sharp output. It is an extremely friendly program, fast,
- simple, and easy to use, yet powerful and comprehensive. You can use Z-Star

-
- A.R.T. Software is using this method of distribution to keep the price
- of Z-Star down to an absolute minimum, and to insure that when you purchase
- Z-Star you know what you're getting. Comparable software sells for a
- minimum of $100 - $200. Traditional commercial distribution would force our
- price higher.

- ABOUT Z-Star™ AND Z-StarDemo
- Z-Star and Z-StarDemo are black and white programs. Color is not used or
- supported. They should run from an unlocked disk. They do anything a
- typical Mac program does, including creating, opening, printing, closing,
- and saving files, zooming, scrolling, and resizing windows, etc. You can
- open up to five windows at a time. Cut, copy, paste, or undo are only
- supported for desk accessories. Within Z-Star there is nothing to cut,
- copy, or paste. Z-Star requires system 4.2 or later and the 128K ROMs. It
- has hierarchical menus and other features which are not supported in
- earlier systems. Z-Star is compatible with system 7. It runs well under
- MultiFinder. Other programs can work in the background behind Z-Star.
-
- Z-Star operates very much in the usual fashion, and you shouldn’t be
- able to do any damage to anything by playing around with it. Z-Star has
- been tested on machines from a Mac Plus to a Mac IIfx with no problems. But
- everyone is a little different and we must allow for the fact that you may
- come up with some strange combination of options or inits that somehow
- causes a problem. If you do, please let us know what it is.
-
- Z-Star expects to have 560K of memory within which to run. The
- program itself occupies about 200K, and each chart requires about 65K. The
- allotted memory gives it a little elbow room within which to do its work.
- Z-StarDemo has been set to require the same amount of memory so that it
- will mimic the memory requirements of Z-Star. Although Z-StarDemo is a
- substantially smaller program, it is strongly recommended that you do NOT
- reduce the memory allotted.
-
- Z-StarDemo is a fully functional version of Z-Star v1.3.1 with just one
- limitation. You cannot create a new chart. When you choose New in the File
- menu, or Re-Enter Data in the Edit menu, you will get an informational
- dialog telling you how to obtain Z-Star 1.3.1. With that one exception,
- Z-StarDemo works exactly like Z-Star v1.3.1, including saving, opening,
- closing, and printing files. There are no other limitations. The fully
- functional version of Z-Star requires about 30 seconds to calculate a chart
- on a Mac+, substantially less on the Mac II (about one second on an fx).
-
- Included in this package is a folder with sample charts. You can use
- Z-StarDemo to open these charts. Run Z-StarDemo and use the Open command in
- the file menu to open the charts in the sample folder. Or just double-click
- on the chart icons inside the Z-Star Charts folder. Once you have them
- opened, you can manipulate them just as you would with Z-Star except you
- cannot alter the data from which they are calculated. You can change house
- systems, display aspects, print them, or save the alterations into new
- files. In fact we encourage you to put Z-StarDemo through its paces. Try it
- before you buy.
-
- When you purchase Z-Star it will come with a printed manual. It is a
- powerful and complex program. All the same, Z-Star is an extremely friendly
- program. You should be able to explore its power with Z-StarDemo with only
- a little help. We assume you are familiar with how to operate a Macintosh
- computer in general.
-
- USING Z-StarDemo
- To run Z-StarDemo, simply double-click the icon. Use the Open option in
- the File menu to open the sample charts in the Z-Star Charts folder. You
- can have up to five open charts. There are many options in Z-Star over
- which you have complete control. Look in the various menus to find out what
- they are.
-
-
- Each window has its own set of options, or preferences (like what house
- system to use). To change any particular option, just make the change in
- a menu. That change is made for that window and saved when the file is
- saved. No other window will change. Each chart is fully independent. When
- you reopen the file, it is exactly as you left it.
-
- In the Houses menu you can choose the current house system, and how to
- display houses. When you make a selection the active window will be updated
- to reflect the change. House systems supported are: Campanus, Koch,
- Placidus, Equal House, Meridian, Morinus, Porphyry, Regiomontanus, and
- Topocentric.
-
- In the Aspects menu you select which aspects to display, which planets
- have selected aspects displayed, which planets have all aspects displayed,
- the orb for each aspect, and the type of line to draw for each aspect. To
- display an aspect, make sure both planets are turned on (use the Which
- Planets option) and the aspect itself is turned on (use the Which Aspects
- option or select the aspect from the menu). You can set the orbs for the
- aspects in the Set Orbs dialog. Aspects available are: conjunction,
- semi-sextile, sextile, square, trine, inconjunct or quincunx, opposition,
- semi-square, quintile, and sesquare.
-
- In the Prefs menu, use the Data Prefs option to format date, time,
- coordinate and angular data (items like how the month will be displayed, or
- whether angles will be rounded to the nearest degree or minute). Each
- possibility leads to a dialog box with all the choices, and a sample of the
- format style you've selected. Global preferences exist independently of any
- window that is open. Preferences include every display option in Z-Star,
- such as house system, what aspects are displayed, what orbs are used, etc.
- The global preferences are used to create new windows (which Z-StarDemo
- does not do). You can set the global preferences by making changes when no
- window is open, or by using the Set Global Prefs option in the Prefs menu
- (which changes the global prefs to match the current window). You can save
- your preferences with the Save Prefs command. The next time you start
- Z-StarDemo the global preferences will match your choices. You can set any
- window to match the global preferences at any time with the Set Window
- Prefs option in the prefs menu.
-
- The planets are displayed in their houses, accurate to the nearest
- minute or to the nearest degree, whichever you choose in the angle format
- dialog. You can learn how many and which planets are in various principles
- and elements, like fire signs or angular houses. More information is
- available through popup windows. Click on the symbols for planets and the
- cusp signs in the chart. In the lower left corner of the Z-Star document is
- a grid detailing aspects. Click on any planet symbol around the grid, or on
- any square in the grid for more information.
-
- Make some display changes to the sample files and save them as new
- files. Print them on your printer to see the final result on paper. If you
- have several charts open, you can choose Print All to print them all at
- once. If you have an ImageWriter, use the Page Setup dialog to select Tall
- Adjusted and Best printing for sharpest results. On a LaserWriter, use Text
- Smoothing.
-
- Have fun, and explore. This brief help file merely touches upon the
- power of Z-Star. If you are interested in astrology, you'll like Z-Star. We
- are confident there is no better software on the market for calculating
- astrology charts.
